post 86 - being popular

So how does one get art in the popular section of deviant art?

I'm not asking because I'm looking to have my art there. I'm asking because I really can't figure it out. I see the "popular" pieces there and I'll check them out, but I can't figure out why they're popular exactly. Is it the artist that's popular and not the piece it's self? Or is it the art regardless of the artist? I try and check the page views and the number of times a popular piece has been viewed or faved and some times the number is high and sometimes it's not very high at all.

I'm dumb founded. If the point is to showcase art of all the artists and give more exposure to them then I'm not sure it's working because I constantly see the same artists in the popular in the top slots. How is this supposed to help the lower end of the fave scale? I seems like it turns the whole site in to a popularity contest and that's not right.

Now FA doesn't have a popular section and I kind of like it that way. Everyone gets the same exposure this way, and I think it works. Again, I'm not complaining, I just can't figure out the formula the site is using.

Sorry for the rambling... I was just wondering is all.

To get a piece of art considered a "Popular" piece by DA, the system will choose it if it has a high number of favorites... like around 500 it seems. Either way, the only way to get that is to... what Sprite37 said. Draw what it popular to 90% of DA's population, such as his suggestions, a few billion times... and you'll get there

I never understood why it was really necessary to 'be' popular here. It was never my intention - I just wanted a place to put up my stuff. And check out other artists who are MUCH cooler than I lol.

Being popular sucks...I'd rather have the cash prize :giggle:

Naruto or Kingdom Heart fan art gets lots of popularity, it seems. For a Daily Deviation, just get a naked gal and take her picture. That seems to work.

Unoriginal anime/manga is killing the site - I couldn't agree more. Of course there are some exception, some truly original pieces, but generally its sooo BORING.

AGree with some of the ppl on here. Im sick of piling through fanart day in and day out. But Antiplod hit it when they said ANIME/MANGA. That's the popular thing on deviantart. If you draw anime good. But I probably dont really notice the fanart because i see it too much. I just joined so idk really how things work.

It's on how yOU as an artist expose yourself. And most of these artist has been here for either 2 or more years. I MEAN really think about it, they've had time to accumulate their watchers and such.

But er...I myself don't care about being popular ^^; i just love it for sake of letting others see my art work
